Many people today like to play the Cornhole game, but they are not really sure where it came from. In addition, there are conflicting opinions as to where the game really did get its start, and the why and how of the issue. Some people have said that Cornhole started as far away as Germany or some other part of Europe, but most people discount this. The largest part of the argument is whether the cornhole game, sometimes also called the bean bag game or the Bean Bag Toss, got its start in Cleveland, Ohio or in Chicago, Illinois. Between the two cities there is a somewhat bitter rivalry, as each place wants to claim the title for the origins of the cornhole game. The cornhole sets, though, are built virtually everywhere, and there is no real reason for most people in the country to be concerned about the origin of the game. Still, though, argument about it persists among people for whom the Corn hole game is more than just a hobby.
These people take the game very seriously. They practice many hours, and they often make their own cornhole boards, giving them a strong sense of accomplishment. Some of them also make their own cornhole bags. Usually, though, they do not make the same kind of corn bags that were originally made when the game was invented. Most of the Cornhole Bags today are made from heavy cloth and filled with plastic pellets. This stops the inside filling of the corn hole bags from degrading over time, as true corn or beans would do. It helps to keep the game more sanitary, especially if the bags were to get wet, and it also makes the bags last much longer than they otherwise would. This is, of course, a financial benefit to anyone who either buys or makes their own cornhole bags.
The same kind of problems can be true with Cornhole Boards that are left out in the elements for too long. People who build their own boards will want to coat them with a sealant so that they are protected from the wind and rain and sunlight that can damage the wood. It is also a good idea to bring them inside when they are not in use. Some of the commercial boards that are built today are made from plastic, and they hold up better in the elements, but prolonged exposure to sunlight can still weaken them. No matter what type of board is used or what the bags are filled with, people from Illinois to Ohio and many other places take the game very seriously. There are organized cornhole tournaments with prizes, and for a lot of people the game has become much more than just a hobby. This does not mean that they do not enjoy it, but only that they take that enjoyment to a competitive level made even more so by their inability to agree on where the cornhole game actually came from.
